Overview

ChirpChirps is a peer-to-peer communication app. We do not operate servers, collect data, or track users. Your messages travel directly between devices over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi — they never pass through our infrastructure because we have none.

Data we collect

None. ChirpChirps does not collect, store, transmit, or sell any personal data. There are no accounts, no sign-ups, no analytics, and no telemetry.

How communication works

All communication occurs directly between devices using:

• Bluetooth Low Energy — for device discovery
• Wi-Fi Direct / MultipeerConnectivity — for voice, text, and file transfer

No data is routed through the internet or any third-party servers. Messages are encrypted end-to-end using AES-256-GCM before leaving your device.

Encryption

ChirpChirps encrypts all channel communication with AES-256-GCM. Each device generates a unique Ed25519 identity key pair stored in the iOS Keychain. Key material never leaves your device.

Permissions

ChirpChirps requests the following device permissions, all processed locally:

• Microphone — push-to-talk voice communication
• Local Network — connect directly to nearby devices
• Location — optional; shares your position with nearby peers only during a check-in you start by hand (see Location sharing)
• Camera and Photos — capture and share media with nearby devices
• Speech Recognition — on-device live transcripts of incoming voice
• Notifications — message alerts

Nothing is uploaded anywhere.

Location sharing

Location is the one permission that can put something about you in front of other people, so it works differently from the rest.

• It is off until you ask for it. ChirpChirps never requests location access at launch or as a side effect of opening the map. The request appears only after you open the check-in screen and read what sharing involves, and you can decline it.
• You check in manually, every time. Your position is shared only after you tap Check In, and only for that session. There is no automatic check-in, no background sharing, and no setting that shares your position continuously.
• Each check-in lasts 15 minutes. Sharing then stops on its own. It also stops the moment you tap Stop, if you leave the app, or if you turn location access off. It never restarts by itself — including after you reopen the app.
• Only nearby peers see it. Your position travels directly to devices on the mesh around you over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. It is not uploaded, not stored by us, and not shared with anyone else — we operate no servers that could receive it.
• Declining costs you nothing else. Push-to-talk, channels, voice notes, text messages and the map itself all work without location. You simply will not appear on other people's maps.
• You can block anyone. A blocked peer is dropped entirely on your device — voice, messages and map position alike — and disappears from your map.

Third-party services

ChirpChirps does not integrate any third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking. The only optional network connection is downloading offline map tiles from OpenFreeMap, which occurs only when you explicitly request it.

Data storage

Messages and settings are stored locally on your device using an encrypted SQLite database. Uninstalling the app permanently deletes all data.

Age rating and children's privacy

ChirpChirps is rated 18+ and is not directed to children. Because the app can show a user's location to other people nearby, it is intended for adults only. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone, of any age: the app has no accounts and no servers, and collects no personal information from any user.

Changes to this policy

If we update this policy, we will post the revised version here with an updated date.
